Our event coordinatorCompared to the rest of our executive (past and present) I’m a relative newbie to motorcycling.  I rode one summer when I was 21, then not again for 20 years. That summer’s riding was short lived, as I took a spill and broke a bone in my foot.  Twelve years ago, Ron and I got together.  I rode pillion for 2 years, but I wanted my own ride.  Along came ‘the lizard’ (2001 Kawasaki 500 – the little ninja), which I rode for 5 years.  It was a great little bike, but short on wind protection, alternator power (for my electrics!) and cargo capacity.  We looked at lots of other bikes over the years, but I’m ‘inseam challenged’.  Then BMW came out with the lowered F650 twins. We ordered an Azure Blue Metallic one early in 2009, and I’ve been wearing out tires on it ever since!

My role as Event Coordinator for Valley BMW Riders is to organize/coordinate the club potlucks (Cabin Fever in Feb/March, AGM in April) and BBQ (August), as well as confirm venues (and coffee pots!) for our 4 campouts.  And, of course, whatever else Mr. President sends my way!!!

Valley Riders is a big part of mine and Ron’s lives.  I treasure all my friends and riding buddies, so don’t be surprised to be greeted with a big hug!

Our webmasterBorn in ´61, riding bikes since i got my drivers license 18yrs later enjoying the twisted roads in my home area but also from the northern sea down to the southern alps ever since on different bikes like Honda 400, BMW R80RT, Goldwing1500, BMW1100GS, K1100RS and now on an older but trusty 2003 K1200RS.
I came to BC in January 2002, to work and live in this beautiful area. Got my BC motorbike license a year later and enjoyed the places around my new home.
Sad enough, i had to move back at the end of 2005 to take care of my old folks.
I met our former president Ron and his "better half" a couple of months before i took my flight home and have been a member since then.
The Kamloops guys kept in touch and when Ron asked me to become part of the "head section" as a webmaster, i was more than happy to give my part to the club´s success.
I hope you like the "look and feel" of our website.

Browse and enjoy.
Mike Huellenhagen

Our TreasurerWhere were you born?
I was born in Brandon General Hospital in 1925.  That’s the ward right next to 1926.

When did you come to BC?
Originally in 1966, I then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and spent four years in Gimli Manitoba from 1967 – 71, was transferred to Ottawa Ontario from 71 – 82 and was then transferred to Comox BC.  I retired from the military in 1988 and moved to Kelowna.

What is your profession?
I have worked as an aircraft technician, aircraft electrical installer, bus driver and heavy equipment operator.  Now I am a professional retiree and coffee shop critic.

Hobbies?
Gardening, restoring old motorcycles and goofing off.

Dreams?
To take a motorcycle trip through New Zealand and Australia, and goof off over there for a while.

When did you start riding?
1960, was too young to have a license but that never deterred me.

What was your first bike?
A Honda 50 step through, after all you meet the nicest people on a Honda, and obviously on a BMW too.

When did you join BMW MOA?
2008

Why?
Gary Smith wouldn’t give me his password so that I could look at the flea market on the MOA sight.

When did you join VBMWR?
Can’t honestly remember but I’m sure Martin was instrumental in twisting my arm and relieving my wallet of ten dollars.

Why?
Because Martin said if I would give him ten dollars, he would give me twelve dollars worth of goodies.  I just can’t pass up a bargain.

What do you like about both clubs?
The camaraderie, being kept informed of the latest technical innovations, the pot lucks and of course the twelve dollars worth of goodies, which according to Ron is now up to sixteen dollars worth of goodies due to inflation

Dislike?
Good question.

Which do you like to do? Explain! Travel, Tour, Camp, Hotel, Rally? Group ride?
Race? Putter?
Travel & Tour:  Well I’ll just bunch the two together and say I have some great riding buddies and look forward to each and every trip.
Camp:  This is definitely a four letter word and should be avoided at all costs.
Hotel:  Aaaaahhhh!!!, what else can I say.
Rally:  Love it as long as there is a hotel nearby.
Group ride:  Is that anything like a group hug?
Race:  What happens when two of you share a hotel room, both wake up at the same time and head for the bathroom.
Putter:  I think I am becoming a professional putterer as I mature.

Highlights in your Riding career?
Learning to keep a motorcycle upright.

Lowlights?
Learning that you can’t always keep a motorcycle upright.

What is the meaning of life?
Life is like a box of chocolates, sweet, fattening, full of cholesterol, but it sure as hell beats the alternative.

Our vice presidentI was born in the thriving metropolis of Armstrong, BC (long before it became a metropolis) and was raised in Kamloops and Kelowna.  I’m not sure how I got into motorcycle riding as I don’t have any motorcycle genes in the family tree. However, on my 16th birthday I simply had to own a bright blue Kawasaki 90 two stroke.  As my birthday was in December, I taught myself to ride on snow and ice covered roads.  Did I mention that this was a street bike?

I rode that little bike all over the Okanagan Valley but sold it to help fund college tuition.  That created a ten year riding hiatus for me.  I moved to the Vancouver area (after a brief stint in Williams Lake), got married and pursued my career.  I was once again bitten by the motorcycle bug when I saw a brand new 83 Yamaha Virago sitting on the showroom floor in Port Coquitlam.  This was in February 85 and it was offered at a great price.  It didn’t take long for me to have that bike out on the road dodging snowflakes.  (Do you see a pattern here?)
I rode on my own for a couple of years and after meeting some other Virago owners I joined the Virago Owners Club.  That started a 20 year association with a great group of people.  We morphed into the Coast Riders chapter and with the demise of the Virago name plate we broke off from the VOC and formed the Coast Riders Motorcycle Club.  During that period I served as Treasurer, Secretary, Vice-President and then President of the club which is still active today.

In 2000 I joined the BC Safety Council as a motorcycle instructor and taught for two years at their Richmond location.  That was a great experience and got me into instruction as a career choice.  I started teaching electronics for BCIT on a contract basis, then got on full time when a posting opened up in Kelowna.
Kathi and I moved to Kelowna in 2005 and shortly after I met Tom Maxted and we began riding together.  I accompanied Tom to a number of Valley BMW Riders breakfasts and it didn’t take long before I realized that this was another great group of people to associate with so I paid my membership dues and joined up.

So why would a rider who rides a Honda (ST1300) and a Kawasaki (KLR650) join a BMW club?  The answer is that I truly enjoy how this club operates.  I enjoy the relaxed nature of the club and I have been made to feel welcome at a number of BMW events.  Having Breakfast rides and Campouts set up so that members make their own way to the venues allows them to ride their own ride either singly or in small groups.

I have honestly had enough of structured group riding and I truly enjoy the non-structured atmosphere which retains all the social benefits of a club.
Will I ever own a BMW?  Probably, but my nature is that I keep my bikes for a long, long time.  In all my years of riding, I’ve only ever owned five motorcycles.  (Two of which I have today.)  Maybe in a couple of years I’ll look at getting a GS style bike to replace the two I have now.  In the meantime, I’m looking forward to contributing to the club and taking part in the events.
I’m looking forward to seeing you on the road.
