Stainless Steel Exhaust Repair

I'm in the midst of a repair of the transmission on my 1992 R100RT.  Among other things, I had to pull the exhaust off the bike to remove the transmission.  Over Christmas I took the opportunity to clean and polish the exhaust pipe and notice that the right pipe was fractured almost all the way around where it clamped onto the primary exhaust.  When I first got the bike each silencer was missing a mounting bolt and the other was loose.  I can only assume that the flexing at that time caused the fracture.  I had replaced the mounting bolts with SS bolts but hadn't noticed the fractures at the time.
At any rate, I hunted around for someone who could weld the fracture as a new set of silencers was pretty spendy.  On Gary Smiths recommendation I took the pipe to Altar Metal Fabricating on Stremel Rd in Rutland.  I dropped of the pipe last Thursday and picked it up today (Monday).  They did a great job and only charged me for 1/2 hour or $50.

They had asked if I wanted the weld polished and I said not to bother as it would be hidden by the clamp anyway.  I thought they did a great job in a short time at a very reasonable rate so I would heartily recommend them.  I just thought I would pass this on.

Cheers, Wayne
