Hello Fellow Riders:
Does anyone out there have experience doing a 2002 R1150RT Spline Lube?
It's due every 65, 000 kms, I believe, and I'm at 115,000 and starting to get concerned.
BTW: I'm NOT a mechanic, so it's probably beyond my VERY basic abilities. Therefore,
I would need to find a NON-BMW Boutique shop to keep the costs down
Any ideas out there?
Tks,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
I’ve done a spline lube on my 1995 R1100GS. It isn’t overly difficult, but does require that you separate the transmisssion from the engine, so some mechanical aptitude is required. For a non-dealer BMW boutique shop, I recommend Red Rock Garage in Beaverdel. Dan Mirabent at Red Rock will take good care of you!
Hope this helps!

Hi Daniel:
Are you referring to the Drive Shaft splines or the Engine output splines which engage the clutch?
I did the former on my 2001 R1150GS last winter and it wasn't too big a job. Breaking loose the pinion bolts and lock nut to remove the swing-arm was the toughest part and did require some heat to breakdown the Loctite and an impact wrench to get them loose. Other than that, not very hard.
The engine output spline through the clutch would be a bigger job. As Tim suggests it would require separating the transmission from the engine. I plan to tackle that one for next winter's project. I probably should have done it last winter as with the driveshaft and swing arm out you are half way there. The only thing that would make it more difficult on your RT would be removing the bodywork.
Do you know if yours was lubed at 65K? If it was, then you could probably set it aside for a winter project if you have a place to work on it. You could probably get some assistance as well. I also recommend the Clymer Shop Manual.
Cheers, Wayne

Wayne: The 65K Service was done (with everything else from day 1 to 100 K) at S&R Island BMW on the Island.
However, as the 3rd owner I am a bit in the dark as to what work actually was completed? Chris Harris (You Tube) stated that most shops shy away from this unless specifically requested, but IDK for sure about S&R Island?
Nonetheless, thank you very much for your input. I'm at 115 K now, so it's definitely on my mind...
