What Did You Do To Your Bike Today?

No, nothing before I heard those horrible, horrible noises coming out of the bike! Luckily, I was able to pull over right away, before the flailing driveshaft punched a hole through the side of the Paralever, or jammed, causing the rear wheel to stop dead! I'm pretty sure I know why it failed. I think the rubber boot between the Paralever and the back of the transmission was not seated properly (probably for many years) and had allowed moisture and debris inside the Paralever. Over time the moisture caused the u-joint to deteriorate and it ultimately failed. I was very fortunate it didn't happen on top of Apex Mtn or at highway speed, or the outcome could have been far worse! Also, as I say, it was fortunate that it happened on the last day of last riding season, and not the first day of this season. At least I had 6 months to deal with it, rather that having my bike out of commissioner during riding season! Glass half full, you know! And, now, I am intimately familiar with my bike, which is a really good thing! I learned a lot this winter!

Thanks Mike! I am really happy with how the re-build worked out.

I enjoyed meeting some of the club members at this morning's breakfast in Armstrong. Hopefully we will meet some day (either here in the Okanagan or where you are... I am guessing Germany??). I look forward to participating is more club events over the coming year! Cheers, Tim

My Drive shaft fail was about the same. Heard a few clunks before getting to the Oroville Camp out. Let go completely on the way home. Due to needing to get to a safe spot I pushed up the hill a bit with the clattering. Still had a bit of drive. Then none. Beat up the swing arm badly. Found some slightly used parts, so the rig should be good to go soon. New clutch Disc, new/used drive shaft, swing arm, rear diff, rear brake disc, starter, alternator belt. Performed a valve adjustment, with some new spark plugs. Should be good for another hundred K. After cleaning all that northern mud out of all the nooks and crannies. :-) NOT!

Mostly back to one piece. Lots of cleaning and re-aligning of bits. Well as much as I clean
