Hi Brian
You're a much better welder than I am. It looks plenty strong so hopefully your clunk is gone.
I'm gone a bit backwards on the RT. After Wednesday Breakfast I took a short ride to warm things up so I could change out the Final Drive, Drive Shaft and Transmission Oil. As soon as I touched the Drive Shaft Drain plug I knew I had a problem. The drain hole threads were stripped. Bugger!
I pulled the final drive and sure enough there isn't enough room to drill and tap the hole for a helicoil without removing the pinion gear and the threaded seal holder.
There are two special tools required to remove these two parts. (A third tool if you want the holding fixture for the final drive.) It turns out that Bob H had one of the tools and Kelly F has the other. We've loosened the pinion gear but I'll have to take a run to Falkland to pick up the other tool. In the meantime I'll need to order the drive input seals before I can put it back together so it will be at least a couple of weeks to get this sorted out.
In the meantime I have the GS insured so its not all bad. Also I can go ahead with overhauling my carbs while I wait.

Stripped plugs always present a challenge. On the bright side you will know your way around a BMW Diff
Going to put a plate on the current rig first week of April so we'll see if my clunk is gone. Might have the new one by May if every thing goes to plan

Just to keep the thread going....
I bought a pair of wheels from Herman Kovacs. His former bike didn't have ABS so the front wheel didn't have a sensor ring. I ordered a used one from Italy (still a lot cheaper than buying a new one). Watching the Fedex tracking was strange as it went from Italy to France (where it spent time seeing the sights I guess) and then it went back to Italy and finally here. Got it installed yesterday..

Let us know how it works. I had a few ABS issues over the years, usually figure them out.

Now I know why most don't run a Car tire on the rear. Seeing as I have cornered the market on BMW rear wheels, who needs 8 rear wheels?? The latest one came with a car tire on it, worn out of course. What a pain in the ass to de-mount, don't think I could have done it with out my fancy tire machine. No way with just tire irons. Any ways a new K60 going on the old rig.

I finally finished up my RT Airhead refresh today. I put the fairing lowers and side covers back on and went for a 100km ride.
Everything went well and she ran great. A couple of small issues to complete. I have a small oil weap from the oil pressure sending unit. Also, I fought with the engine guards for a while and decided to try without them. I may change my mind in the future.
I'm not too impressed with the new Airhawk seat pad. I'll give it a bit more of a try, but it may end up in the Buy & Sell section.
For the truly masochistic among us, if you want to see the whole refresh process I have it documented on my photo gallery at THIS LINK .
Cheers, Wayne
